A baby is a wonderful addition to a family. However it also comes with some logistical problems, just ask any new parent. Try getting out and about with a new baby and you’ll find it isn’t qutie as simple as it used to be. You need a baby stroller.

But the good news is that now baby strollers are very good. All you had to choose from years ago was a heavy and difficult to use steel pram. Try getting a heavy bulky steel pram in the car, but modern baby strollers are excellent. And baby friendly.

But a modern baby stroller can be folded up easily and put into the car with minimal problems. And taken out and reassembled too. And a good stroller should have good storage for all of mums gear or shopping as well.

Modern strollers are mother friendly and baby friendly. They will have comfortable seats which should recline so that baby can sleep or sit up and look around, and for a growing baby they should also have adjustable footrests. And they must have a solid 5 point adjustable harness that keeps baby secured in the seat at any age. Babies trying to stand up in a pram have been the cause of accidents in the past.

And it’s essential to have a good brake, as modern strollers do. The brake should hold the stroller fully loaded on a significant hill, though you should not stop on a hill unless necessary, and when on a hill stop with the stroller across the hill for maximum safety. And the brake should operate on all wheels with a foot operated action.

And surprisingly, a good baby stroller isn’t as expensive as you would imagine, if you know where to buy. As a new parent you have many expenses, and you don’t need to be spending big on some things. I have just been looking at some excellent brand new cheap triple strollers, for those lucky parents with 3 babies. At around $200 it’s great value and it’s cheap convenience.

So remember, if you have a baby, a stroller is very cheap convenience for you and comfort for baby. It’s way easier to get around using a stroller than it is without. Cheap convenience and comfort.

There are formal standards for strollers in many countries that they must meet before being sold. Here’s a few things you ought to look for in a stroller.

Make sure that the stroller has a good adjustable harness, preferably a 5 point harness. And it needs solid brakes that can hold a fully laden stroller on a real hill. Look for foot operated brakes and brakes where one foot action applies all the brakes.

Front wheels should swivel but be capable of locking if needed.

And NEVER leave a baby on it’s own in the stroller unattended, even if strapped in properly. Don’t stop the stroller without applying the brake even of flat ground, and if parking on a hill park across the hill rather than down it. Preferably don’t park on a hill. And don’t attach a dog lead to the stroller as you may look away and find your dog, and stroller, and baby, have taken off.

And here’s a couple more safety tips for the safe use of baby strollers. If you need to take baby and stroller up stairs then look for a lift. It’s very difficult to take a baby in a stroller up stairs safely. If you must then take baby out of the stroller, but better not to go up.

And finally, if you’re taking your dog with you, don’t tie your dog lead to the stroller. Chances are you’ll turn around and back to find that your stroller has taken off with your baby in it following a running dog.

Remember too, a stroller is extremely affordable. You can find very good new strollers if you know exactly where to find them for a very low price. It’s affordable comfort for baby and convenience for you.

FROM WOMB TO WHEELS – AGE PLAYS A ROLE

Birth to six months is the period where your child doesn’t have adequate head and neck control for an upright stroller. You’ll need to find a stroller onto which you can attach your infant seat, one that has a bassinet, or one rated for newborns.

From 6+ months and older, the stroller world really opens up to you! Unless your baby has special needs, she or he can ride in nearly any stroller out there.

Caution when jogging! Pediatricians warn against too much jarring until your baby has very good head/neck control, usually 8 to 10 months.

WALK MUCH?

If you’ll be using a stroller daily for more than just going from your car into a store, you’ll love having one that is comfortable and smooth to push. Neighborhood walks and paths are so much more enjoyable with a great rolling stroller.

This is where trying out hands-on pushing is tough to replace with online browsing. If purchasing online, be SURE you read reviews on how a stroller pushes and handles prior to making a purchase (on PeppyParents.com, we’ve already done all that work for you!).

Generally, larger wheels mean easier pushing. Real rubber tires mean better handling. Suspension (shock absorbers) mean smoother ride. On-board engines mean less work (okay, we made up the one about the engine).

If you don’t intend to use a stroller as much more than a car-into-store-back-to-car device, it’s not as critical to worry about the ride.

SIZE MATTERS! AND SO DOES WEIGHT.

The lightest good quality stroller available is around 8 pounds — about the weight of a gallon of water. And, full-sized, full-featured strollers can tip the scales past 30 pounds.

Think about how often you’ll be lifting the stroller up stairs, into your car, or into a closet. If it’s something you’ll be doing daily, try to balance weight with features and performance.

Generally speaking, lighter weight strollers have less features and a less refined ride. They’re typically smaller and might have a less comfortable seat for your baby. The lightweights might also lack some convenient adjustments too. The ONLY reason to get an ultra lightweight (i.e., under 10 pounds) stroller is for frequent car errands or travel.

If you find a full-featured, full-size standard stroller that is under 20 pounds, you’re doing very well. Most are under 25 pounds.

Expect the very lightest all-terrain stroller to tip the scales at 20 pounds, as well as the very lightest joggers. Most are under 25 pounds.

As far as size, look at the folded size when making your decision. Even if weight is the same, it’s much easier to lift, carry, and store a stroller that is less bulky when folded.

AND NOW, THE FEATURE PRESENTATION

All the features are where it really gets more confusing, as no stroller has all of them. Here are some of the more popular ones:

Reverse handle or seat — this lets you face your baby as you push. Very sweet.

Cupholder — if not included, don’t despair! You can buy universal-fit cupholders.

Storage basket — you’re going to need it for snacks, diapers, wipees, bottles. The bigger, the better.

Sun Canopy — unless you live deep in a shaded forest, sun protection is very important. Bigger sun canopies provide better protection.

Adjustable handle — very important for parents who are under 5′3″ or taller than 6″. A nice feature for all other parents.

Reclining seat — some strollers are easier to recline than others.

5-point harness — safety is paramount, and this is the safest type of harness.

Adjustable legrest — one more way to make it more comfortable for your growing child.

Bumper bar — (also called grab bar, toy bar) handy for securing toys in front of your baby while you stroll. Toddlers enjoy it too.

Snack tray– popular on American brands, but not on many others.

I would often take my daughter on strolls in an attempt to squeeze in a good workout while she napped. When parents travel with a small child, they always consider the safety of their precious bundle when they need to drive or travel. Baby seats have been designed so that the infant or child does not get hurt in case of an accident. But parents cannot carry the infant all the time especially when they are shopping or sight seeing. Thus the need for a stroller so that their hands can be free and both the parents and the child can be comfortable. But there are advantages and disadvantages in using a baby car seat stroller.

A baby car seat stroller or traveler is a combined baby car seat and baby stroller in one. This is handy for parents who don’t want to spend extra money on separate strollers and baby seats. The advantages of having a stroller is that when you will be driving you can remove the baby seat from the stroller and attach it to the seat of your vehicle, then stow the stroller in the trunk or back of your car. When you get to your destination, you can just re-attach the baby seat back to the stroller. Another advantage with the stroller is that the accessories have been tested for safety together with the car seat and the stroller.

One of the disadvantages of having a baby car seat stroller may be its size or bulkiness. Parents will already have to deal with the extra baggage containing the baby’s diapers and feeding bottles, so it may be a hassle having to deal with stowing away the bulky stroller.
