Your Children Must Always be in Car Seats
Too often I see children standing up in cars, looking out the back window or just sitting on laps. Don’t parents know that in an accident the body of an unrestrained child becomes a projectile, bouncing around the interior of the car? A child can be thrown from the car or through a window or windshield and fatally injured, and occupants of the vehicle can be hurt by a child impacting their heads or necks. Apparently, some people still have not gotten the message.
Are car seats too expensive? Or are people just plain lazy?
There are different types of car seat, usually varying depending on the size, age or weight of the child. Remember to buy a new car seat – old car seats may not have the latest safety features or may have been compromised in an accident.
Infant car seats – only face the rear; usually used in the back seat; may be used as an infant carrier and may be attachable to a stroller.
Convertible car seats – Used in the rear; when your child gets older may change into a forward-facing car seat or even a booster seat.
Booster seats – the last step before your child can wear a regular seat belt; used with the car’s seatbelt.
It is important that you follow the manufacturer’s instructions about how to attach the car seat. Also, you always want to send in the car seat’s registration form, so you are notified if the manufacturer recalls the seat for any defect. If your child is wearing a heavy coat, make certain that the harness straps are tight. Make sure to tighten the straps when your child wears lesser outerwear (when the weather warms up). Some safety agencies recommend removing your child’s outerwear in the car, so that the child can be fastened securely into the car seat.
Do not re-use a car seat after a serious accident – one that causes severe damage to the car. Get a new one.
Common car seat mistakes:
Placing child in wrong size car seat for his weight/size;
Placing a rear-facing car seat in the front seat of the car;
Not making sure the harness is tightened correctly;
Positioning the harness chest clip incorrectly;
Not using the latch correctly.
Not just a safety issue, it’s the law. Below I summarize New York Vehicle and Traffic Law, Section 1229-c. For specific questions, consult the statute. No person shall operate a motor vehicle in this state unless:
(1) all back seat passengers under the age of four are restrained in a specially designed seat which is either permanently affixed or is affixed to such vehicle by a safety belt,
(2) all back seat passengers of such vehicle who are age four or older but under age seven are restrained in an appropriate child restraint system (+ combination lap and shoulder harness belts)
(3) all front seat passengers (a) under the age of sixteen are restrained by a safety belt; or (b) if they are under the age of four, by a specially designed seat which is either permanently affixed or affixed to such vehicle by a safety belt, or children who are age four or older but under age seven are restrained in an appropriate child restraint system (+ combination lap and shoulder harness belts)
The rule changes somewhat if: the passenger four or younger weighs more than 40 pounds, or if the car is not equipped with shoulder harness belts, or if all the lap and shoulder belts are already in use by other children in the car
No person shall operate a motor vehicle unless such person is restrained by an approved safety belt. No person sixteen years of age or over shall be a passenger in the front seat of a motor vehicle unless such person is restrained by an approved safety belt.
This section shall not apply to taxis, liveries, and buses other than school buses EXCEPT no person shall operate a school bus unless all passengers under the age of four are restrained in a specially designed detachable or removable seat, or another approved restraining device.

Car Seats “what to Know for Safety”
Children should ride rear-facing in a car seat until they reach at least 1 year of age and weigh at least 20 pounds. Parents are tempted to turn the car seat around, before the child is old enough, because it is difficult to see the child when they are rear facing. The baby would rather be turned around also, so they can see Mom and Dad. You must resist doing this, because it is not safe. Your babies neck is just simply not strong enough to take the force that is caused by a car accident. So as hard as it is, these guidlines must be followed.
Different Rear Facing Car Seats
There are 2 kinds of rear-facing car seats. There are infant-only seats and convertible seats. Infant car seats are small and have a handle for carrying the seat. Many of these come with a stroller system that the seat can snap into. Infant car seats can not be installed front-facing. Infant car seats can only be used for up to 22 to 30 pounds depending on the seat. Each manufacture is different, so be sure to check their specifications. They are more commonly used for infants, because they can be used as a carrier also. The baby can be set in them in the grocery store, doctors office or where ever you go. Make sure to keep your baby strapped in at all times, to prevent them from slipping out.
Many infant car seats come with a base for the car. You attach the base in the car and then you can just pop the car seat into it. This is nice because you don’t have to mess with the seat belts every time you put your baby in the car. You have the option to buy extra bases to use if you have multiple cars. Some car seats can be put in with or without the base. That might be something you’ll want to look for. Then if you ride with someone else you won’t have to move the base out of your car to use in another car.
Convertible car seats can be used rear-facing until the baby is old enough and then they can be turned around. This saved you money, because you can use the seat longer. These can be used for a couple of years depending on the size of the child. They take up more room and are not meant to be taken in and out of the car. They are rated to be used rear-facing for higher height and weight, so they are great for babies that are bigger or taller.
Types of Harnesses
The 5-point harness is the most secure. They attach on both sides of the babies shoulders and the hips. And then between the legs. These are used in infant only car seats and in convertible car seats.
The T-harness is a padded t-shaped or triangle-shaped shield attached at both shoulders and then between the legs. It would be considered a 3-point harness. These are used in infant only car seats and in convertible carseats.
The overhead shield has a padded tray-like shield that comes over the child’s head and rests in front of the baby. This one only applies to the convertible car seat.
Installation
Always make sure the car seat is tightly installed. The harness should fit snugly around your baby. Never use a car seat in the front seat of a car with a passenger air bag. If it inflates, it will cause serious injury to your baby or even death. Check the harness slots. They should be at or below your babies shoulders. If the seat belts in your car require locking clips, then make sure you use them. All car safety seats should come with locking clips. Check your vehicle manual. Most newer cars do not need locking clips. If you are using a convertible seat in the rear-facing position, make sure the seat belt is routed through the correct belt path. Read the instructions that came with the car safety seat to be sure. If your vehicle was made after 2002, it may come with the LATCH system, which is used to secure car safety seats. Make sure the seat is at the correct angle so your infant?s head does not flop forward. Many seats have angle indicators or adjusters that can help prevent this. If your seat does not have an angle adjuster, tilt the car safety seat back by putting a rolled towel or other firm padding (such as a pool noodle) under the base near the point where the back and bottom of the vehicle seat meet.
Always use the instruction manual that is provided with the car seat. It is the safety of your that is at hand, so make sure you use the car seat the proper way that it was intended.

Choosing an Infant Car Seat — How to Help Ensure Your Child’s Comfort and Safety
Infant car seats are designed for the comfort of newborns, and can be used from an infant’s birth until the infant reaches a weight of approximately 20 pounds (depending on the model of the car seat). These car seats are designed to be used in a rear facing position, with the infant riding in a lying down position, and with the car seat, itself, secured either by the car’s seat belts or a special anchoring system, and the infant secured in the car seat by a harness. This arrangement provides the infant with the best protection while riding in a vehicle. Infant car seats come in a variety of designs, colors, and patterns, and their cost and available features vary by brand and model. Child car seat manufacturers are bound by very strict guidelines, and you may be surprised to find that some of the more expensive car seats don?t provide any better level of protection than those which are more moderately priced.
There are also ‘convertible’ infant/toddler child car seats available. These car seats can be used for children from infancy (with the car seat in the rear facing position), into their toddler years (with the car seat turned around and used in the forward facing position), until they are ready for a booster car seat. In the rear facing mode, these types of car seats can typically be used with a child up to about 25 lbs, and then used in the forward facing position until the child reaches about 40 lbs. These types of car seats have a larger seat than an infant only car seat, and many come with padded inserts for use when the child is still small.
Whichever type of child car seat is used, the car seat’s harness should fit the child snugly, but not too tightly, and the harness straps should be easily adjustable. Many of the newer models feature a ‘five point’ harness to keep the child secure. The straps should be long enough both to allow room for the bulkier clothing that the child will wear in colder weather, as well as to allow for the child’s continuing growth, so that he or she will not outgrow the car seat prematurely.
There are a variety of accessories available for many models of car seats for infants. A common accessory is a head rest for the infant. This is a small inverted U shaped piece that helps keep the infant?s head secure, and prevents him or her from slumping over in the car seat while riding.
Some child car seats have a detachable base that stays in the vehicle, and to which the part of the car seat that the child sits in can be locked. With this type of car seat, the base must be set properly in place before the other piece is locked to it, or the combination will not provide the child with the highest level of protection. Extra bases may be available for purchase to allow the same carrier to be used in multiple vehicles without having to keep shifting the base between the vehicles. Also, some car seats are compatible with strollers, to create a convenient infant travel system.
